So my buddy Charles Adler from Quiksilver is curating an art show. It’s called The Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction “CALIFORNIA GOLD.” Basically it’s a group dedicated to preserving surfing’s heritage for future generations. It’s happening May 11, 2013 at the Orange County, California fair grounds.

Charles is the man when it comes to the arts and knowing anything and everything you would want to know about the history of surf. I myself have a love for anything and everything vintage as well. I am fortunate enough to know this dude! He asked if I would like to put something in the show and of course I said “HEK YEAH” I would love to!

I love to hand screen print! see this fun video of me hand screen printing here (video edited by my daughter Kira Sutherland) It relates so well with how I create art and graphic design. It’s a simple art form that’s been around for centuries. It also translates so well if you’re trying to recreate the simplicity in design from 1960’s.

My concept for this came from just that, simplicity, my love for surf, all things vintage, graphic design and hand screen printing. If you’ve ever surfed you would know when you’re dropping into a perfect peaking wave you immediately get that stoke that SMILE. It’s a moment in time that is an unbelievable feeling.

So I designed the print based on that. The one thing I was missing after designing and painting this composition before bringing it into the computer was that one epic photo from back in the day. That’s when I called on my friend Larry Daniels. This guy had the smarts, the mind to actually capture surf and lifestyle images from around 1967. This guy is the real deal and a super nice guy. He has some great stories to tell. Larry’s photo just brought this concept together like the sunshine on your back.

This was a limited edition of 38 total prints. 19″x25″ 2 color print. Printed on archival white stock all signed and stamped. Only 35 left. You can buy one here. SHOP NOW!

First off, you may wonder what the true meaning of what graphic design is….. It’s a visual communication that refers to a number of artistic disciplines that combine words, symbols and photography to convey a message or idea. This is what Salty Design Foundry does and we do it well. We marry art with commerce to help your brand stand out. Just look around, you see it everywhere. When you’re at the grocery store you see packaging on the shelves. Driving down the road you see signs that tell you to turn left or right. You pick up a magazine and there it is. You view someone’s website and you see it there. It’s everywhere and it’s here to stay! It’s truly amazing to be able to communicate visually. Most of us don’t even know it’s happening and that’s what great graphic design is. Clear and concise communication.

It is hugely important to your business. Without it, your potential clients will have a hard time identifying who you are and what you can do for them. We believe that incorporating the best art, photography and timeless typography into your brand it makes you more interesting and appealing. Which in turn will sell more product and more people will want to work with you.

Several of Salty Design Foundry’s clients here in Orange County use our services for identity (logos and branding), collateral materials (brochures, restaurant menus) advertising and product packaging.

Quiksilver Foundation has recently referred Wildcoast Costasalvaje to Salty Design Foundry to provide them in maintaining a consistent look and feel by a refresh of their logo, and developing a brand identity book to distribute throughout California and Mexico to their supporters. Salty Design Foundry is excited to be working with Wildcoast considering their passion and heart for conserving the ocean shines a connectedness between Salty to Wildcoast. Salty’s passion for the ocean led us to affiliating all our efforts into striving to do all we can to help Wildcoast with achieving that very mission of retaining a pristine coast and keeping nature in touch with community. Compassion, freedom, love, and unity between nature and community exhibits qualities Wildcoast articulates, while Salty’s design work displays these components as well, leading Salty to be that perfect fit for Wildcoast. With your help and mine we can gratify Wildcoast’s hopes of protecting and preserving our ocean and all the Great Pacific’s wildlife by supporting their conservation efforts.

We decided on the location of Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach for the beautiful California coast scenery. Fall in California is gorgeous with clear sunny days but this day happened to be 70 degrees too so it was perfect.

There is no shame in my game and I have not problem “doing it all” to make for a great outcome. It’s not just art directing, we are the producer, stylist, photo editor and the photographers assistant all in one. We have a great time working on these projects and really enjoy trying to push the shoots to another level each season. Kanoa Igarashi and John Mel are the model team riders we use for almost all the shoots and they are always a pleasure to work with.

Here is a small sampling from the shoot plus a couple photos of me in action.

This is a sample of the first run.
